The Room VR: A Dark Matter is Fireproof Games' virtual reality entry in The Room series. In London in 1908, a police investigation into a missing Egyptologist leads you through the British Institute of Archaeology and stranger places beyond, opening puzzle boxes and odd gadgets with your own hands. It is a VR-only single-player game and an easy pick for anyone with a headset who enjoyed the mobile or desktop Room games.

With around 2,500 of 2,577 Steam reviews positive, it is one of the best-received VR puzzle games on Steam. Players say the series' layered contraptions translate naturally to tracked controllers, with familiar mechanics alongside new interactions that only work in VR. Puzzles are described as thoughtful and mostly intuitive, rarely obscure, and several reviewers single out the polished visuals and the late-game scenery. The tone is Lovecraftian mystery with light horror.

The common complaint is length: most players finish in three to five hours and wish there were more. At full price that is a fair point, and many reviewers suggest buying on sale. Recommended to every VR owner who likes puzzles; newcomers can start here, though series fans will catch more of the references.

Pros

  • Room-style puzzle boxes and gadgets built for hand-tracked VR
  • Victorian London archaeology mystery with a Lovecraftian edge
  • Polished interactions and memorable late-game scenery

Cons

  • Over in three to five hours, which feels short at full price
  • VR only, single-player
