Our verdict

7.5/10

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Players: 1
  • Playtime: 1–2 h

The Bird of the North is a short deduction game from solo developer Uvost, set in an alternate 1921 where an ice age has frozen the Industrial Revolution. Through visions you walk around frozen dioramas, each with characters caught mid-moment. It suits solo players who loved Return of the Obra Dinn or Golden Idol and want a compact one-evening mystery.

Players rate it Positive, with 39 of 40 reviews in favour. The core twist is that you assign one sentence to each character from a list that also contains decoy lines nobody said, then order the scenes on a timeline board. Reviewers praise the art, the changing ambient sound in each scene and a story that comes together at the end. Most call it easy for genre veterans.

The common caveats are length and clarity. Most players finish in one to two hours, some characters are hard to tell apart in the art, and a few found the timeline step frustrating because it only confirms when a whole chapter is right. One reviewer warns the trailer spoils parts of the cases. At its low price it is an easy pick for Obra Dinn fans; skip it if you want a long, hard puzzle.

Pros

  • Match spoken lines to frozen characters, with decoy sentences mixed in
  • Atmospheric icy dioramas with strong art and scene-specific sound
  • Timeline board pulls the visions into one satisfying story

Cons

  • Most players finish in under two hours
  • Characters can be hard to tell apart in the art
  • Timeline only confirms once a whole chapter is correct
