Our verdict

8.5/10

  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Players: 1
  • Playtime: 3–5 h

Rusty Lake Paradise is a 2D point-and-click puzzle adventure from Rusty Lake, the Dutch studio behind the Cube Escape series. Jakob Eilander returns to his family's island after his mother's death to find it struck by the ten plagues of Egypt, and you work through each plague with strange family rituals and her hidden memories. It suits solo players who like macabre, surreal puzzle boxes with hand-painted art.

Players rate it Very Positive, with about 93 percent of 1,400 reviews in favour. Reviewers like how the same small island transforms with each plague, keeping the loop snappy, and several call it bigger and more open than earlier entries, with plenty of optional interactions. Main puzzles are seen as fair, with the hardest finds kept to optional secrets for achievement hunters.

Caveats are minor: a few puzzles struck players as obscure, the overarching story can leave newcomers confused, and the gore may put off the squeamish, though one horror-shy reviewer found it fine. Most finish in three to five hours. At its low price it is an easy recommendation for puzzle fans and a good entry into the series.

Pros

  • Island changes with each of the ten plagues
  • Fair main puzzles, with tougher secrets left optional
  • Hand-painted pastel art and a theme per plague

Cons

  • A few puzzles are obscure
  • Series lore can leave newcomers confused
  • Gross-out and gore moments may bother some
