Our verdict

8/10

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Players: 1
  • Playtime: 3–4 h

Machinika Museum is a first-person puzzle box game in the mould of The Room, with an alien twist. You play a researcher at a far-future museum who receives strange extra-terrestrial machines and must work out what they do and how to get them running, piecing together what happened to their owner along the way. It suits solo players who like tactile mechanical puzzles and a quiet sci-fi mystery.

Players enjoy prodding each device, rotating parts and pressing buttons until it reveals another layer, and many describe the difficulty as easy to medium. Reviewers praise the sound design and smooth animation, and some note a slightly eerie turn in later chapters. The story arrives mostly as text and is thin, a few point out, and it ends by leading straight into the sequel.

The main complaints are clunky controls, since one button both moves the camera and manipulates objects, and occasional bugs where a correct action does not register and forces a restart. Most players finish in about three to four hours. A good pick for an afternoon if you liked The Room; skip it if you want hard puzzles or a rich narrative.

Pros

  • Alien machines to dismantle feel fresh within The Room formula
  • Polished sound design and smooth mechanical animations
  • Gentle difficulty makes it a relaxed one-afternoon game

Cons

  • One button for both camera and object handling feels fiddly
  • Occasional bugs where a correct action fails to trigger
  • Text-only story ends on a setup for the sequel

About

From the Steam store page · View on Steam
Machinika Museum invites you to discover and solve puzzles rich in mystery! An original adventure combining hidden objects and an intriguing story inspired by the excellent old school puzzle game Myst and the more recent The Room and The House of Da Vinci.

In a distant future, finding machines from alien civilizations is not unusual, especially in a museum dedicated to them. Your job is to receive these devices and to understand how to repair them.

But this time, something is different. You have not been given any information and this seems to be rather urgent... What are these machines? Who sent them? Why won't anyone give you any answers? You will have to find for yourself which secrets and stories are hidden behind these mechanisms.
