Our verdict

8.5/10

  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Players: 1
  • Playtime: 3–5 h

Detective Ridelle is a light-hearted murder mystery set aboard a luxury train. You play Ridelle, invited by an anonymous letter, and after a passenger turns up dead you search compartments, question an eccentric cast and solve escape-room style puzzles from a real escape room designer. Story scenes are told in a visual novel style. It suits solo players who want a cozy whodunit with puzzles rather than horror.

Reception is close to unanimous: 82 of 83 Steam reviews are positive. Players tag it most heavily as a detective, visual novel and escape room game, with comedy and logic close behind. The one detailed review calls the difficulty just right, the plot fairly standard and the character interactions charming.

With so few written reviews there is little detail on pacing or weak spots, and the plot itself is not the draw. Expect a single evening or two of play at full price. Pick it up if you like train mysteries and character-driven puzzles; look elsewhere if you want a long or hard escape game.

Pros

  • Train murder mystery mixes suspect interviews with room puzzles
  • Puzzles by a real escape room designer, pitched at fair difficulty
  • Charming, comedic cast told in visual novel scenes

Cons

  • Fairly standard whodunit plot
  • Short for the full price, single-player only
