Our verdict

7/10

  • Difficulty: Easy

Alcatraz: VR Escape Room is a single-room VR escape game from OriginsVR. You wake up locked in a bedroom with a headache and piece together who you are from notes left by someone trying to get you out. It is VR only, built around tracked controllers, and suits headset owners looking for a short, beginner-friendly room.

Players describe a classic physical escape room: drawers, keys, a telescope, a code box and a Morse code puzzle, all against a one-hour timer. Most finish in 30 to 45 minutes, and opinions on difficulty split between those who found it too easy and a few who needed two hours. Several reviewers enjoyed playing with friends who watched the monitor and called out clues.

The complaints are consistent. Physics can misbehave, with items clipping through furniture or getting lost outside the window, the six-digit code box is fiddly to enter, and the ending stops on a sequel tease that many found abrupt. The hint system gives full answers rather than nudges. Recommended as a cheap first VR escape room, ideally on sale; experienced puzzlers will find it slight.

Pros

  • Hands-on room with drawers, keys and a telescope suits VR well
  • One-hour timer adds pressure like a real escape room
  • Gentle difficulty makes it a good first VR escape game

Cons

  • Physics glitches can push key items out of reach
  • Ends on an abrupt sequel tease after about 45 minutes
  • Hint system gives full answers instead of nudges
